Original Medicare (Part A & Part B) is provided by the federal government to all eligible Medicare beneficiaries across the United States.  Private insurance carriers then provide additional coverage,  such as Supplement and Prescription Drug Plans, to compliment Part A & Part B.  The plans offered by these private carriers can vary and are specific to states.

Medicare Supplement plans, also commonly known as Medigap, are plans offered across the entire State of Ohio regardless of which county you reside in.  These plans cover any medical services from all hospital networks and doctors across the United States that accept Original Medicare.

Part D plans, also commonly known as Prescription Drug Plans (PDP), are also offered across the entire State of Ohio.  These plans may cover any prescription drugs you may take, except for ones that are administered at a physician’s office or hospital.  The key with these plans is to understand which drugs are covered under each plan’s formulary, as these frequently differ between carriers.

Medicare Advantage, or Part C, plans are slightly different than Original Medicare.  These plans offer slightly modified versions of Part A and Part B, and may or may not include a prescription drug benefit (Part D).  A person’s ability to enroll in one of these plans is determined by the county of their primary residence.  The plans offered can be different even within the same city — such as Columbus, Dublin, and Westerville — if the city spans two or more counties.  While these plans may limit coverage to medical services from only one or two specific local hospital networks, they also offer benefits such as a reduction in monthly premiums (sometimes even including premium give-backs) along with coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services.
